What is RTE?
The Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE) was introduced to provide free and compulsory education to children in the country. It guarantees free education to children aged Six to 14 years. The enactment of this act made India one of the 135 countries in the world where education is a fundamental right. However, even after this there are many shortcomings and challenges due to which thousands of children in the country are deprived of compulsory education. The main objective of Right to Education Act 2009
- To provide free primary education to every child between the ages of 6 & 14 years
- Compulsory registration, attendance & completion of primary education of every child in the age group of 6 to 14 years.
- Under Article 6, children have the right to enrol in any neighbourhood school.
- This Act ensures non-discrimination against children belonging to weaker sections and disadvantaged groups
- If there is a child who could not take admission in any school at the age of 6, he can take admission in a class later according to his age.
- If there is no provision for completion of primary education in any school, the student will be given the right to transfer to any other school.
- Private and special category schools will also have to reserve 25% seats in Class 1 for children from economically weaker sections.
- No child shall be prevented from enrolling in any class or expelled from the school.
